Canada from new angles
If you’re visiting the Vancouver area this summer, look above and below the ground for two new Canadian attractions.
On Tuesday, a $16.5-million history-themed park called Storyeum is scheduled to open under the main parking lot in Vancouver’s Gastown district. The multimedia park, sprawling over an area the size of six hockey rinks, focuses on British Columbia’s history -- from tens of thousands of years ago to the present.
After descending by elevator, visitors step into a tunnel where figures of hundreds of fish are projected onto the walls, simulating a salmon run from the last Ice Age. They then move forward into history, guided by actors in period dress and theatrical sets.
“There’s lots of music, sound, special effects, wind and fog ... to bring history to life,” said Storyeum spokesman Graeme Drew. The trip takes 70 minutes.
Storyeum admission in the summer will be about $16 adults, $13.65 ages 13 to 18 and $11.50 for ages 6 to 12; children younger than 6 are admitted free. (800) 687-8142, www.storyeum.com.
At the Capilano Suspension Bridge and Park in north Vancouver, the new Treetops Adventure transports trekkers up to 100 feet above a rainforest floor on a series of walkways suspended among 300-year-old Douglas fir trees.
The walkways, which stretch more than 650 feet across, are reached by way of the Capilano Suspension Bridge.
The older bridge, 250 feet high, provides panoramic views of the Capilano River below and the mountains of Vancouver, said Nancy Stibbard, owner and general manager of the park. The Treetops Adventure is “a much more intimate experience,” she said.
Summer park admission is about $16 adults; $8 ages 13 to 16; $4 ages 6 to 12; younger than 6, free. Open daily. (877) 985-7474 www.capbridge.com.

Changes at airport after roof collapse
Passengers flying through Charles de Gaulle Airport on the outskirts of Paris are advised to recheck flight times after a roof collapse last week that killed four people and forced closure of part of Terminal 2E. Flights were being diverted to the airport’s five other terminals.
The airport’s director, Remy Brun, said Terminal 2E, used by Air France and Delta Air Lines, among others, might remain closed for up to a year. It usually handles about 60 flights a day.
