The Heat Is On
Re “An Ambitious Russia Won’t Trade Growth for Green,” Commentary, May 24: Amity Shlaes slaps the Kyoto Protocol as a “socially driven” policy, as if it were the dress code for some sorority mixer to which she was not invited. Global warming could indeed be experienced as a social event, but it won’t be a pleasant one. Heat is physical. It does things like melt ice caps and alter climate and plant growth. Even if the food is good and the drinks are plenty, global warming isn’t going to feel like a party. It will feel like a disaster.
