Poetry going in (perpetual) motion
Tamblyn, who plays the teen who finds God in the oddest places on CBS’ “Joan of Arcadia,” is a writer as well. She had her debut as a poet in early February. And why not? Her mother sings, her father is actor and choreographer Russ Tamblyn, so naturally she’s creative. But though acting and poetry loom large in her life, they are not all Amber has on her mind.
Reading time
When my workweek ends, it can be 2 or 3 in the morning. But usually there’s time to go to a poetry reading. My favorite poetry places are Beyond Baroque, of course, then there are some playhouses in Santa Monica that hold readings. There’s always Midnight Special bookstore and Borders; they’re OK.
But I really like intimate spots, in older-looking buildings. Each of those buildings has its own atmosphere, and those attract intense crowds, great readers. Beyond Baroque holds no more than 200 people. That’s the most you want at a reading. I also like to hang out in reading rooms where you can buy out-of-print books or just browse.
I go to a lot of non-art museums. I like to learn anything about early music, instruments, 1930s photography. I just like to go and see stuff like that.
Dad and company
I used to go to jungle parties. Now they’re in Larchmont and Lush, but I don’t like manufactured places. I liked going to old warehouses where you could just dance or catch guerrilla screenings of film shorts. But nobody’s doing that as much anymore.
But you can catch some screenings at Vidiots in Santa Monica. My dad screens a lot of films there. It’s close to where I live, so sometimes I’ll go there and hang out with him and his friends -- Quentin Tarantino, Dennis Hopper, Bruce Connor, George Hermes and Neil Young.
On the beach
Now Saturdays, I wake up and turn on the Cartoon Network. That might be around noon, but that’s OK. My favorite ‘toon? “SpongeBob SquarePants.” And next to sleeping in, I like going to the beach. I’ve got a beach cruiser and I usually head toward Venice Beach.
I’ll catch a movie on the Santa Monica Promenade, the Nuart or at the Laemmle. I like French noire, movies like “City of Lost Children,” “Buddy Blue,” the “Triplets of Belleville” -- that’s an amazing movie. Oh, and I liked “Pure Formality,” a Gerard Depardieu film.
A natural Sunday
Sunday mornings I used to love to watch the Charles Kuralt show. He’d always go all of those places and then the last five minutes, it would just be natural sound, birds or the wind....
Now I usually get up and head for the Farmers Market. I buy jalapeno-stuffed olives and eat them with crackers. I don’t really cook, but I do buy my vegetables and things like that. After, I might take a yoga class or it’s the beach again. Sunday at Venice Beach is really cool.
If I eat anything, it’s going to be a hot dog or I’ve been on this weird salad thing lately. I’ll just have a huge salad with dressing -- I love bleu cheese dressing. But I pretty much keep in shape with my bike. The bike’s really physical, so I can eat all I like.
I used to break-dance -- anywhere, at warehouses, parking lots....But now that culture’s dead.... Now I’ve got a personal trainer, Jillian Michaels. I go for a workout every couple of weeks.
