Alice Newhouse, 79; Newspaper Executive’s Widow, Philanthropist
Alice Gross Newhouse, 79, a native New Yorker who became a well-known philanthropist and socialite in New Orleans, died Sunday at Touro Infirmary in that Louisiana city of complications after surgery.
The widow of Norman Newhouse of the Advance Publications communications empire, she moved to New Orleans with him in 1968.
Educated at Wellesley College and New York University, she met Newhouse when he was the editor of his family’s Long Island Press and she worked there as a reporter.
In New Orleans, she worked to establish Odyssey House, a residential substance-abuse treatment facility.
She also was involved in getting the short-lived Repertory Theatre New Orleans off the ground.
Former congresswoman and ambassador Lindy Boggs, a friend, praised Newhouse for her ability to fit into the old culture of New Orleans while promoting new programs.
