From Times Staff Reports
A jury awarded about $210,000 Tuesday to the family of a woman shot to death by Long Beach police during what her lawyer described as a schizophrenic episode.
Marcella Byrd, 57, was fatally wounded Jan. 19, 2002, as she walked down a street with a knife in her hand. Police said the woman, who had previously been treated for mental illness, threatened them with the knife before they opened fire.
