Macaw Abuser Sentenced to Service Hours
From a Times staff writer
A Costa Mesa man convicted of animal cruelty and abuse for slamming his pet macaw into his boat was sentenced Friday to perform 960 hours of community service and attend anger management classes.
Anthony James Ellis, 53, had been given a sentence of 120 days in jail, but Orange County Superior Court Judge Susanne Shaw altered it.
After Ellis’ bird bit him in March 2003, Ellis became angry and broke the bird’s leg and beak. The bird has since been adopted by a woman who takes in abandoned animals.
