A Tribute to Troy’s New National Title

I would like to send a brief message to all the Trojan graduates out there who appear to have skipped, failed or just never enrolled in a math class at USC.

By my calculations, when you add this newly discovered 1939 one-13th national championship in football to the other halves, thirds and quarters that you’ve won over the years, you can now boast a whopping seven and two-fifths national championships! Way to go!

Let’s see. USC goes back 65 years to claim a football title in a season where two other teams went unbeaten and untied while USC tied not once but twice.

I also seem to remember that the Dodgers tied the Yankees for titles in 1977 and 1978, and that the Lakers tied the Pistons last season for the NBA title. And, oh yeah, Mike Garrett was tied for the Heisman Trophy voting the year he won, as well. As Jim Healy would say, “MG has lost it”!

It was interesting reading about USC laying a belated claim to the 1939 national championship. One question, though: Did Shav Glick cover that team for The Times?
