Tennessee Holds Off Kentucky
Former Tennessee assistant Mickie DeMoss gave her old boss Pat Summitt a tough test before Kentucky faltered down the stretch at Lexington, Ky.
Shanna Zolman made a key three-point basket with 1:06 left to lead the top-ranked Lady Vols (17-1, 6-0 Southeastern Conference) to an 81-72 victory over Kentucky and DeMoss, who took over the Wildcats last spring after 18 seasons in Knoxville.
Sara Potts scored 29 points for Kentucky (9-10, 1-5), which lost to Tennessee for the 23rd consecutive time.
No. 5 Penn State 80, Saint Joseph’s 44 -- Kelly Mazzante, who began the game at Philadelphia averaging a Big Ten-best 22.4 points, scored 13 points, but the Nittany Lions (16-3) still routed the Hawks (11-6) for their ninth win in a row.
No. 6 Purdue 58, Wisconsin 42 -- The Boilermakers (17-2, 7-1 Big Ten) won their eighth game in a row by outhustling the Badgers (8-10, 2-6) to loose balls and creating turnovers. They scored 23 points off 20 turnovers.
No. 8 Stanford 85, Washington 59 -- Nicole Powell had 16 points and 10 rebounds to help the Cardinal (16-3, 9-1 Pacific 10) rout the Huskies (11-8, 4-6) for their 24th straight conference win at Maples Pavilion.
No. 9 Louisiana Tech 95, Boise State 57 -- The Lady Techsters (14-2, 7-1 Western Athletic Conference) routed the Broncos (6-11, 2-5) to improve their record against current WAC members to 65-2. They have also won 155 consecutive home games against unranked opponents.
No. 10 North Carolina 75, Virginia 70 -- Ivory Latta made a 10-foot jumper with 39 seconds left to lift the Tar Heels (16-3, 6-2 ACC) past the Cavaliers (9-10, 3-5) at Charlottesville, Va.
No. 14 Minnesota 78, Indiana 46 -- The Golden Gophers (16-3, 5-3 Big Ten) used a 22-4 run over the first nine minutes of the second half to take control at Minneapolis. The Hoosiers (10-9, 3-5) shot 28%.
No. 18 Michigan State 58, Illinois 56 -- The Illini (7-12, 1-7 Big Ten) had the ball with four seconds left but could not get a shot off as time expired, and the Spartans (16-3, 6-2) held on at Champaign, Ill.
No. 22 Auburn 80, Mississppi State 53 -- The Tigers (16-4, 4-2 SEC) shot 56% and never trailed the Bulldogs (7-11, 2-4) at Auburn, Ala.
No. 24 Vanderbilt 74, Arkansas 69 -- Hillary Hagar made a 23-foot, three-point basket with 24 seconds left, and Jenni Benningfield made two free throws to clinch the win for the Commodores (16-3, 4-2 SEC) over the Razorbacks (13-6, 2-4) at Fayetteville, Ark.
