Chase Suspect Arrested After Barricading Himself in House

A suspect was arrested Thursday night at a house near Santa Fe Springs where he had barricaded himself after a televised, hourlong car chase that began in Bellflower, police said.

The suspect was thought to be a 22-year-old parolee who had recently been released from prison, where he had served time for burglary, said Officer Alan de la Pena of the Whittier Police Department.

De la Pena said the chase had started when Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies spotted the man in a stolen car, with a woman in the back seat. Police helicopters and patrol units pursued the car, which eventually ended up in a residential neighborhood near Santa Fe Springs.

The suspect stopped the car at Wakeman Street and Westman Avenue and dashed into a house where relatives were believed to live, De la Pena said. The woman, who remained in the car, was arrested.

Whittier police, who patrol the area, cordoned off the neighborhood and evacuated several nearby homes.

After a standoff that lasted several hours, police and sheriff’s deputies unleashed dogs that flushed the man from the house and may have injured him, officers said. The suspect was taken away in an ambulance shortly before 10 p.m.
