Folkies are ‘Mighty’ funny fare

Though “Mighty Wind” is not as strong or innovative as Guest’s other improvised mockumentaries, “Waiting for Guffman” and “Best in Show,” the comedy is still witty fun, brilliantly performed by Guest’s stock company of farceurs that includes Levy, Harry Shearer, Michael McKean, Catherine O’Hara, John Michael Higgins, Parker Posey and Bob Balaban. “Mighty Wind” revolves around a reunion concert of ‘60s folksingers. Levy and O’Hara give the film its heart as the former folk team of Mitch & Mickey.

The digital edition is filled with very funny deleted scenes, the concert performances in their entirety and a not-to-be-missed commentary track with the very wry Guest and Levy.

Daddy Day Care

Eddie Murphy, Jeff Garlin

Columbia TriStar, $28

Put Murphy together with a bunch of cute kids and animals in a movie and audiences flock to the theaters, even if the product is substandard. Such is the case with this Murphy vehicle, which was a surprise box-office hit in early summer. Parents probably will find some laughs in this strained farce that finds Murphy and Garlin as two unemployed buddies who decide to open a day-care center.

Fox, $30

John Malkovich finally gets his chance to work his magic behind the camera as director of this complex, well-acted political thriller set in Latin America. Bardem stars as an ethical lawyer turned police detective hunting for a terrorist whose followers have declared a war of fear, death and destruction on the country’s residents.
