Finally, Barr Gets Himself a Victory

Dave Barr ended 16 years of frustration with one putt. He birdied the final four holes, capped by a 35-foot putt on the 18th, to win the Royal Caribbean Golf Classic Sunday at Key Biscayne, Fla.

Barr won for the first time since the 1987 Georgia-Pacific Atlanta Golf Classic on the PGA Tour. He earned $217,500 for the win in the first full-field event on the Champions Tour, formerly known as the Senior PGA Tour.

Barr shot a five-under 67 and finished at nine-under 207, one shot better than Gil Morgan and Bobby Wadkins.

“It’s been a long time,” Barr said. “That’s a lot of grinding. It’s great to win, but I certainly didn’t expect to win the first one of the year. To win this one is a great surprise.”

Morgan, the second-round leader, could have forced a playoff but missed a six-foot par putt on the final hole. Morgan shot a 70. Wadkins finished with a 68.

Rodger Davis (70) was alone in fourth at seven-under 209. Hubert Green (71) was fifth at 211.

Thirteen-year-old Michelle Wie shot a five-over-par 77 in the final round of the Hawaii Pearl Open at Aiea, finishing with an eight-over 224.

Playing from the championship tees at the Pearl Country Club, Wie was the only female in the tournament field of 192 and the youngest overall.

Wie was walking with a slight limp. Her left ankle was still swollen from bee stings she suffered during the first round.
