Elephants Moved During Renovations at Zoo
The Santa Barbara Zoo’s two Asian elephants are wintering in Fresno.
When Sujatha (Suzi) and Little Mac return next year, they will find a $2.5-million enclosure renovation that gives them more room and a pool. The project also includes regrading visitor paths leading to the enclosure to conform to the Americans With Disabilities Act.
The renovation should be completed by June.
Suzi and Mac, who are 32 and came from a logging camp in India, were trucked out of Santa Barbara nearly six months ago. They went first to a private boarding facility in Northern California, then were taken several weeks ago to Chaffee Zoological Gardens of Fresno.
