Increase in 911 Surcharge Proposed
A ballot initiative to raise taxes on residential phone customers to help underfunded emergency rooms in hospitals was submitted for review to the state’s attorney general office Friday
The initiative is sponsored by groups representing some nurses, firefighters, emergency room doctors and health-care providers.
It would increase the 911 surcharge on phone bills from .0072% of intrastate calls to .037%, with a cap of 50 cents.
The bill’s backers say it would raise $600 to $800 million annually. They hope to place the bill on the November 2004 ballot.
