Huggins’ Condition Improves
Cincinnati basketball Coach Bob Huggins’ condition improved Sunday, a day after he suffered a heart attack at Pittsburgh International Airport during a recruiting trip.
Huggins, 49, remained in serious but stable condition at Medical Center in Beaver, about 20 miles northwest of Pittsburgh, said Tom Hathaway, Cincinnati’s assistant athletic director.
“He continues to make progress and the doctors are happy with the type of progress he’s made this afternoon,” Hathaway said.
Athletic Director Bob Goin visited with Huggins before returning to Cincinnati to meet with reporters.
“He was alert,” Goin said. “He’s talking. He’s in pain. He has his family there and obviously that’s a tremendous comfort to him.”
Doctors implanted a stent Saturday morning. The tiny, metal mesh device is designed to keep Huggins’ once-clogged artery open.
Hathaway said Huggins could remain in Pennsylvania for several days and then go to Cincinnati.
Dr. Lynne Wagoner, director of cardiac services at University of Cincinnati Hospital, said Huggins’ doctors will have to determine the damage to his heart before they decide when he can return to Cincinnati.
Huggins was at the airport for a flight to Milwaukee for a coaching clinic.
