They’re Keeping ‘Delano II’ at Bay
Matthew Heller’s article (“Delano’s Grand Illusion,” Sept. 1) reveals that while the state peddles prisons to rural communities on a promise of economic prosperity, that promise has been a hollow one. As members of the statewide coalition of organizations fighting the “Delano II” prison, we think it is important to point out that the coalition includes both urban and rural groups from Delano and the Central Valley. There is not a second prison in Delano today because of their hard work challenging the Department of Corrections, the prison guards’ union and Gov. Gray Davis.
