Urban Centers Quiet on Car-Free Day
Many Europeans awoke to unusually quiet streets as the annual car-free day kicked off in 1,400 cities.
From Helsinki to Athens, Dublin to Paris, citizens from more than 30 countries were asked to leave cars at home to raise awareness of the environmental damage caused by traffic.
Brussels cordoned off 60 square miles to traffic, more than any other city. Those who ventured into town before noon could see Belgian Crown Prince Philippe and his wife, Mathilde, on a bike as they approached the Royal Palace after a 3-mile ride from their residence in Laeken.
