Arizona Offense Grounded by No. 22 Wisconsin, 31-10

Wisconsin found its running game, and Arizona lost its touch through the air.

Anthony Davis ran for 110 yards and two touchdowns as the 22nd-ranked Badgers defeated Arizona, 31-10, Saturday at Madison, Wis.

Brooks Bollinger threw the ball effectively to help Wisconsin (5-0) spread its offense to open up running lanes.

Bollinger completed 13 of 19 passes for 127 yards and one touchdown. He also ran for one touchdown to improve to 27-7 as a starter, tying a school record before giving way to backup Jim Sorgi.

Arizona (2-1) looked nothing like a team with the country’s second-best passing attack. Quarterback Jason Johnson struggled against the Badger pass rush, and his receivers dropped several passes. He completed 13 of 27 passes for 129 yards and was intercepted once before being yanked after the third quarter.

Last week against Utah, Johnson threw for 416 yards.

The only bright spot on offense for Arizona was Clarence Farmer. Last year’s Pacific 10 Conference rushing leader struggled in Arizona’s first two games, but on Saturday he ran for 131 yards, including a 70-yard touchdown.

The Badgers blew open the game with a second quarter that featured a solid running game, efficient passing, and waiting for the opponent to make mistakes.

Davis was held to successive career lows of 81, 75 and 49 yards the previous three games. But he had 104 yards by halftime, including touchdown runs of six and three yards.

Bollinger set up the first TD by passing to Jonathan Orr for a 25-yard gain that put the Badgers in position for Davis’ six-yard touchdown run.

On Arizona’s next possession, Wisconsin’s Alex Lewis blocked a punt, setting up Davis’ three-yard touchdown run for a 14-0 Wisconsin lead.

No. 9 Oregon 41, Portland State 0--Onterrio Smith rushed for 115 yards and two touchdowns and Jason Fife had two touchdown passes as the Ducks (4-0) defeated the Division I-AA Vikings (2-1) at Eugene, Ore.

Smith scored on runs of 25 and three yards and became the first Oregon player to gain at least 100 yards in the first four games of the season.

No. 13 Washington 38, Wyoming 7--Cody Pickett threw for 404 yards and two touchdowns as the Huskies won at Seattle to hand the Cowboys (0-4) their school-record 12th consecutive loss.

Pickett completed 34 of 45 passes without an interception and also scored on a one-yard run in the first quarter for Washington (2-1).

No. 16 Washington State 45, Montana State 28--Jermaine Green’s big day was dampened by an injury to Cougar quarterback Jason Gesser.

Green, a little-used reserve who battled a knee injury in fall practice, ran for two touchdowns and caught another as the Cougars (3-1) defeated the Division I-AA Bobcats (2-2) at Pullman, Wash.

Gesser left the game in the third quarter with Washington State ahead, 31-7, after getting injured on a sack. He was taken to a hospital for X-rays, which revealed dislocated cartilage in a rib.
