Kaiser Comes Through in Clutch

Riverside North and Fontana Kaiser played a game so close Friday night at Riverside College that even when time had expired, a winner hadn’t been decided.

A defensive pass interference penalty by Kaiser on the final play of the game gave North, No. 9 in The Times’ rankings, one last shot, but Kaiser defensive back Marcus McCliman intercepted the desperation pass and preserved a 24-21 nonleague victory.

The lead changed hands three times in the final quarter, with Kaiser (1-0-1) taking it for good on a two-yard touchdown run by Allen Wade with 55 seconds remaining.

It was the second consecutive game that came down to the final minute for Kaiser, which forged a 29-29 tie with Rancho Cucamonga last week by scoring and making a two-point conversion with 47 seconds left.

“It’s always in doubt,” Kaiser Coach Dick Bruick said. “But we want to be able to thrive under pressure.”

Wade, who rushed 17 times for 90 yards and two touchdowns, capped a 77-yard final drive that featured quarterback Steve Sturdivant and Antoine Cadon connecting on a nine-yard completion on fourth and seven, followed by a 37-yard completion that set up the winning score.

North (1-1) took a 21-17 lead when Josh Barnett scored from a yard out with 5:22 left. The score was set up by a 42-yard pass play from Dion Morton to his twin brother, Damon.

Leading, 14-7, late in the first half, Kaiser tried a long pass on the final play of the half, but Damon Morton intercepted it and returned it 70 yards for a 14-14 halftime tie. Dion Morton completed 16 of 26 passes for 183 yards with two interceptions.

Sherman Oaks Notre Dame 35, Westlake Village Westlake 21--The Knights chalked up their second consecutive upset, turning an unstoppable second-half ground game into a nonleague victory at Westlake.

Notre Dame (2-0), led by Collin Morgan and Brandon Clayton, rushed for 247 yards, 221 in the second half.

Morgan had 113 yards in 15 carries and Clayton had 88 yards in 10 carries, including touchdown runs of 15 and 43 yards in the second half.

Westlake quarterback Erik Vose completed 11 of 27 passes for one touchdown with two interceptions.

Running Back Merrill Mullary had 46 yards and a touchdown in 18 carries for Westlake (1-1), which had 164 yards on offense.

Alta Loma 31, Fontana Miller 7--Senior running back Greg Holt gained 177 yards in 38 carries and scored on runs of one and three yards to lead the Braves in a nonleague game at Chaffey College.

Alta Loma (2-0) gained 196 of its 272 yards on the ground.

Eric Weddle and Sione Toki each also had two-yard touchdowns.

Alta Loma, ranked No. 24, also controlled the game on defense, scoring its first two touchdowns after Weddle intercepted a pass and recovered a fumble on consecutive series.

Kyle Jacobo completed seven of 21 passes for 91 yards but threw four interceptions for Miller (1-1), two of them to J.D. Moore. Jacobo also rushed 17 times for 99 yards, scoring the Rebels’ only touchdown on a 23-yard scramble with 45 seconds left in the first quarter to make the score 14-7.

Los Alamitos 56, Brea Olinda 10--The Griffins were unable to end Newhall Hart’s unbeaten streak at 23 games last week but had no problem stopping the 14-game winning streak of Brea Olinda, the defending Division IX champion, at Brea Olinda High.

Fifth-ranked Los Alamitos (1-0-1) scored on its first three possessions and quarterback Jeff Kline completed 19 of 23 passes for 227 yards, including scoring strikes of 53 and 28 yards to Jeremy Childs and four yards to Brandley Mandas,

Childs, who had 10 receptions for 185 yards, also caught a 52-yard touchdown pass from Justin Elway, who completed five of seven passes for 131 yards as Los Alamitos rolled up 507 yards of offense.

Brandon Tripp caught 10 passes for 75 yards and also threw a touchdown pass to Rasheed Prescott.

Brea (1-1) trailed, 21-3, after the first quarter, but scored on John Pohlen’s five-yard pass to Evan Moore with 1 minute 23 seconds remaining, only to see Kline throw his third touchdown pass with eight seconds left for a 28-10 advantage.

Santa Margarita 38, Redlands 14--Running back Ashton White gave his coaches and fans a scare when it appeared he had seriously re-injured his right knee, but he soon returned to give No. 9 Redlands a headache.

White, who hurt the knee during the off-season, hobbled off the field early in the second quarter of seventh-ranked Santa Margarita’s victory at Saddleback College after a vicious hit by linebacker Ca Shun Robinson.

But after a little ice and rest at halftime, White came back with a vengeance, carrying 12 times for 68 yards in a 72-yard drive that he punctuated with a seven-yard run.

Quarterback Case Colaw, who completed all seven of his passes for 90 yards, threw a four-yard touchdown pass to Frank Guzman on the next play.

White, who has scored in 13 consecutive games, finished with 181 yards and a touchdown in 29 carries. Fullback Chase McWhorter scored two touchdowns and gained 110 yards in 14 carries for Santa Margarita (2-0).

Running back Zach James led Redlands (1-1) with 136 yards and two touchdowns in 20 carries.

Monrovia 52, West Covina 29--Kenny Parry completed six of 13 passes for 214 yards and four touchdowns, and the Wildcats scored 21 third-quarter points in a nonleague game at Monrovia High.

Brian Guerrero scored on a one-yard run with 7:31 left in the third quarter to pull West Covina (1-1) to within 31-21, but the Bulldogs gave up two touchdowns in the last 1:41 of the quarter.

Adam Gabriel carried 12 times for 93 yards and a touchdown and also returned an interception 17 yards for a score near the end of the third quarter, giving Monrovia (2-0) its biggest lead at 45-21.
