Giant, Long-Flying Flag Is Stolen From Business
A giant American flag that flew for almost 30 years beside the Santa Monica Freeway has been stolen, its owners said Friday.
“Late Tuesday night, somebody climbed over our 7-foot gate, got past two guard dogs and cut through a three-eighths-inch steel cable” that was used as a halyard, said Mike Matosian, a senior official at Southern California Disposal Co. on Delaware Avenue. “It looks like they took a hatchet to that thing.”
Matosian said the 30-by-50-foot flag was taken once before, in 1975. It was a fraternity prank, and the culprits returned the flag.
