Put Best Teachers Where They’re Needed Most
Re “Court Tosses Race-Based School Policy,” Aug. 30:
The Huntington Beach Union High School District should quit worrying about racial transfer quotas for students and see that resources, particularly experienced, capable teachers, are assigned to schools with large numbers of ethnic-minority students. To overcome the resistance of teachers and their unions to assignment based on need rather than on seniority, the Huntington Beach system could offer a premium salary to their best teachers to work in these schools. Such a policy would produce far better results than the inclusion of certain percentage of white students. Incidentally, it might solve their problem by eliminating the desire of white students to transfer.
