Controlling Our Borders
Re “Checkpoint Hours Will Be Reduced,” Oct. 23: The highway checkpoints are part of an overall strategy to discourage illegal immigration, drug smuggling and terrorism by making it more difficult to illegally enter the U.S.
Lower numbers of intercepts at the checkpoints mean the strategy is working by driving illegal entrants to more open areas and separating them from legitimate traffic. Closing the checkpoints will provide faster access for illegal aliens and terrorists. Rep. Darrell Issa’s (R-Vista) proposal will negatively affect U.S. security.
