Picking a No. 1 Won’t Be Easy

Competition at quarterback could last a week. Or it could last four years.

The principals in the race, UCLA freshmen Matt Moore and Drew Olson, cringe at the thought of the latter.

“I think we want a starting quarterback, we don’t want an ongoing battle,” Olson said. “The decision will be made by our performance on the field.”

Both quarterbacks downplayed what is perceived to be their question marks.

Olson, who injured his right shoulder against California on Oct. 19, experienced soreness Tuesday, but he is pleased with his arm strength and accuracy.

Moore, who played for the first time Saturday and directed the Bruins to a victory over Stanford, believes he understands the offense as well as Olson.

“Drew is going to make me better and I’m going to make him better,” Moore said. “Whoever starts, starts.”

Bruin quarterback-receiver Josh Roenicke might be the only person in the Southland to turn down an invitation to the seventh game of the World Series.

His parents had two tickets courtesy of his uncle, Angel third base coach Ron Roenicke, so his father, former major leaguer Gary Roenicke, offered to let Josh go in his place.

“It was a nice offer, but I thought he should go,” Josh said.

Roenicke, who plans to walk on the UCLA baseball team in the spring, is content with having attended the Angels’ 13-5 victory over the Minnesota Twins in the final game of the American League championship series.

Oh, and there was the day last summer he and teammate Spencer Havner took batting practice at Edison Field with Angel Manager Mike Scioscia pitching.

“That was a great day, I won’t forget that,” Roenicke said.
