Top Volleyball Recruit Commits to UCLA

Steve Klosterman of Huntington Beach Marina High, considered the top boys’ volleyball recruit in the nation, has committed to UCLA.

The 6-foot-7 opposite hitter, a two-time All-Southern Section selection, was selected the most valuable player at the USA Junior Olympics championship last summer after leading his club team to the 18-and-under championship.

Klosterman chose UCLA over Long Beach State and Pepperdine. USC, Hawaii and UC Irvine were among the schools that offered Klosterman a scholarship. He will sign a national letter of intent on Nov. 13.

Los Angeles University forward Ruben Boykin, one of the top scorers in Southern California, has committed to Northern Arizona, Wildcat Coach Jim Nakabara said. The 6-7 standout, a member of The Times’ All-South Bay/Westside team, averaged 25.7 points and 11.6 rebounds last season.

San Bernardino Aquinas has forfeited its five football victories for using an ineligible player, Athletic Director Scot Neudorff said. The Falcons’ record drops to 0-7 overall and 0-1 in the Christian League.

Teams getting victories (with corrected records) via the forfeits are: Vasquez (1-6); Redlands Arrowhead Christian (4-3, 1-1 in league play); Yermo Silver Valley (3-4); Riverside Notre Dame (1-6); Big Bear (6-1).

Fox Sports Network has added the Los Altos at Charter Oak football game on Friday to its broadcast lineup.

The Miramonte League game, featuring two of the top medium-sized school programs in the Southland, will be shown live at 7 p.m. on Fox Sports Net 2. The teams have met for the last two Division VII championships and have combined to win the last four division titles.

Senior Manuel Ruiz of Sepulveda Monroe entered the Mount San Antonio College Invitational cross-country meet Saturday as the defending City Section champion.

He left it as a contender for the state Division I title after finishing fourth in the Division I-II individual sweepstakes race with a time of 14 minutes 50 seconds over the 2.91-mile course.

Senior Tim Nelson of Redding Liberty Christian and juniors Troy Swier of San Diego Mar Vista and Mohamed Trafeh of Duarte finished ahead of Ruiz, but none of them run for Division I-size schools.

Senior Troy Werner of Canyon Country Canyon, who won the team sweepstakes race in 14:59, had the second-fastest time by a Division I runner.

“We only run the Mt. SAC course once a year so I didn’t know exactly what to expect of him,” Monroe Coach Dean Balzarett said of Ruiz. “But I was hoping he could run under 15:20.... He really went out and did a great job.”

Senior Erick Maldonado of Chino Don Lugo missed the Mount San Antonio College Invitational cross-country meet because of an injury and won’t race again until the Southern Section preliminaries at Mt. SAC on Nov. 16.

“He’s got a sore spot on the bone above his ankle,” Don Lugo Coach Don Salyers said. “We’re not sure exactly what it is. Hopefully, we’ll know more in the next few days.”

Maldonado upset Luke Llamas of Canyon Country Canyon to win the state Division I title last year, but has had several injuries since then.
