There are a couple of candidates, but Scott Spiezio’s triple up the right-center alley gave the Angels a 4-1 lead and control of the game. Everyone talks about Glaus and Salmon, but Spiezio has delivered several key hits in the postseason, has five RBIs in the World Series and has played great defense.

THE BIG LETDOWN

If you’re a Giants’ fan, you had to expect a better performance from Livan Hernandez. The pitcher who had never lost a postseason game gave up six runs and five hits in 3 2/3 innings. He walked five and never seemed comfortable on the mound. Now the Giants have to rely on Kirk Rueter to even the Series.

It seemed every time Mike Scioscia called for the hit-and-run, the batter came through with a hit. In the third, Eckstein was running and Erstad doubled to right. Later in the inning, he sent Salmon and Erstad, and Glaus singled. Then he sent Glaus on Spiezio’s triple. Aggressive baserunning is one reason the Angels score so many runs.

The fans in Pacific Bell Park waved their rubber chickens and grooved to the “Chicken Dance” when the Angels intentionally walked Barry Bonds in the first. But that was a smart move, as the Giants scored only one run in that inning. The Giants then issued two intentional walks in the game. As they say, birds of a feather flock together.
