Ambitious Building Plans for the LAUSD
The Los Angeles Unified School District has embarked on the most ambitious and most needed school construction project in its history. Ronit Weiss’ assessment of the need for Measure K is misinformed (letter, Oct. 11).
Through the first phase of its construction program, the LAUSD is building 80 new schools, expanding 79 existing campuses and completing 12,500 school repair projects. But this is not enough. In order to give every child the opportunity to attend a quality school in his or her own neighborhood, the LAUSD has to build thousands of additional classroom seats, which is why the Board of Education has placed Measure K, the school repair and construction bond, on the Nov. 5 ballot.
Measure K will allow the district to complete its ongoing neighborhood school building program as well as add approximately 35,000 classroom seats for children -- the equivalent of approximately 40 additional neighborhood schools.
