Woman Gets 25 Years for Niece’s Beating Death
From Times Staff Reports
A 48-year-old North Hollywood woman was sentenced Thursday to 25 years to life in prison for beating her 4-year-old niece to death.
Arcelia Chavez was convicted last week of murder and deadly assault of a child. Authorities say she hit Maria Isabel Cervantes on Sept. 27, 2001, at least 27 times for spitting out food, then waited overnight for the child to die.
The next day Chavez carried the body into the North Hollywood police station.
