Fire Breaks Out on Cargo Ship
Firefighters struggled Monday night to douse a blaze in a 40-foot-long cargo container aboard a ship docked in Long Beach and idled by the West Coast port lockout.
Smoke from the fire was spotted shortly after 8 p.m. by a crewman on the container ship OCL New York. The container held imported clothing and fabric.
“It’s been difficult fighting this fire because the container is stacked high on the ship,” said spokesman Mike Garcia of the Long Beach Fire Department. “We are in search of a crane operator in hopes of having the container pulled off of the ship so we can extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading.”
“There is no indication of arson,” he said, “but we will investigate the cause.”
