Pedestrian Survival

Re “Risks to Pedestrians on the Rise, Study Finds,” Nov. 21:

Perhaps some of the pedestrian deaths can be attributed to Charles Darwin’s theory of the survival of the fittest. While driving, I often see pedestrians, including women pushing baby carriages, who look straight ahead while crossing a street in a crosswalk and do not bother looking to see whether traffic is going to stop or possibly hit them.

Some of these deaths could be avoided if people would take responsibility for their own safety and not risk their lives on assuming drivers will not make a mistake.
