Exhaustive Argument

Alan Lloyd, chairman of the California Air Resources Board (letter, Nov. 24), cannot really believe a zero-emissions vehicle is possible. No engine is zero-emissions or nonpolluting. Any combustion engine will produce water, carbon dioxide or other gases, either directly or indirectly in the production of its fuel. Electric vehicles just move the pollution source to another location. There is also particulate pollution from the tires, brakes, etc.

Diesel power should not be discounted, since diesel engines are much more efficient than gasoline engines. We just need to clean up the exhaust.
