Massive New Slick Heads to Spain’s Coast

A regional official warned coastal residents Friday to brace for the worst this weekend as another massive slick from a sunken tanker drifted toward shore, and he said the ship is probably still leaking fuel oil from the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean.

The tanker Prestige was carrying about 77,000 tons when it split in two and sank Nov. 19.

Reconnaissance planes have spotted new slicks, Galicia’s fisheries minister, Enrique Lopez Veiga, said in Santiago de Compostela.

The central government said anything bubbling up from the Prestige was probably the ship’s own fuel or lubricant, but it did not rule out that the cargo of oil could be leaking.

The oil had been expected to solidify at temperatures just above freezing.
