Islamic Panel Nullifies Call for Reporter’s Death

Nigeria’s supreme Islamic body ordered Muslims to ignore a theological edict calling for the death of a journalist whose article on the Miss World pageant sparked bloody riots.
Conservative Zamfara state issued the fatwa against Isioma Daniel, whose article said the prophet Muhammad would have approved of the pageant.
The Jamaatu Nasril Islam body said that only it and the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs -- both headed by Nigeria’s powerful Islamic figurehead, the Sultan of Sokoto -- have the power to issue a fatwa.
