Smith Is Suspended by Panthers

Steve Smith, Carolina’s leading receiver, was suspended Wednesday for one game by the Panthers after a fight that sent teammate Anthony Bright to a hospital.

Bright’s nose was broken in the altercation, which came during Monday’s film session, the Panthers said.

Smith’s suspension came on the same day the Panthers released offensive tackle Chris Terry, who was arrested for failing to appear in court on a misdemeanor charge of assaulting his wife.

Receiver Isaac Byrd visited Bright, a practice squad player, in the hospital Tuesday.

“The nose was covered. Half the face was swollen and his left eye was closed,” Byrd said.

Smith issued a statement apologizing to Bright and the rest of the team.

Three days after getting the scare of his life, Pittsburgh quarterback Tommy Maddox watched practice and is expected to start throwing Friday.

He has watched replays of the unremarkable hit by Tennessee linebacker Keith Bulluck on Sunday that left him temporarily unable to move because of cerebral and spinal cord concussions.

“I’m anxious to see what I can do, anxious to get back on the horse,” Maddox said.

Indianapolis listed running back Edgerrin James as questionable for Sunday’s game at Denver because of a sprained ankle.... Four weeks after his postgame seizure at Dallas, Seattle receiver Darrell Jackson probably will play against Kansas City on Sunday.... Rookie Jeff Chandler will replace slumping Jose Cortez as San Francisco’s kicker for Monday night’s game against Philadelphia....
