Police have arrested 12 people, including two schoolteachers, accused of buying and selling children to couples who could not have their own, a spokesman for the Mexico state attorney general’s office said Friday.

Officials said they arrested six members of the alleged child-smuggling gang Wednesday -- including the teachers at a school just outside Mexico City -- and six on Thursday.

They also rescued a 6-year-old girl and a 1-month-old baby, both of whom the gang planned to sell for a total of $10,000, prosecutors said.

“The majority of those arrested appeared to be tied to the education system,” said Jose Santos, a spokesman for the attorney general’s office.

Santos said the 6-year-old girl’s father was a high-ranking official in the Mexican army, but he refused to give the child’s name.
