Hits and Misses in Idealab IPOs
Formed in 1996, technology-company incubator Idealab has spun out several public companies over the years. Here are some of the best known and what happened to them:
* GoTo.com/Overture Services: Internet search provider went public at $15 a share in 1999. The stock rose as high as $108 that year. It now trades at $24.09, valuing the company at $1.4 billion.
* NetZero: Provider of free Internet access went public in 1999 at a split-adjusted price of $80 a share. The company merged in 2001 with Juno Online to form United Online. Current stock price is $13.42, valuing the business at $544 million.
* Emachines Inc.: The seller of low-priced computers went public at $9 a share in 2000, valuing the business at $1.3 billion. This year a founding director bought all of the stock for $159 million and took the company private.
* EToys Inc.: The retailer of toys over the Net went public at $20 a share in 1999. Its market value rose as high as $10 billion that year. The company filed for bankruptcy protection in 2001 and was subsequently liquidated.
* Other companies: Idealab has helped launch Carsdirect.com, Tickets.com and Ticketmaster Online-CitySearch.
