China, Other Nations Sign Deal on Spratlys

China signed a landmark agreement with Southeast Asian countries on avoiding open conflict over the disputed Spratly Islands in the South China Sea.
The Assn. of South East Asian Nations and China signed the deal in Cambodia. The pact said claimants would practice self-restraint in activities that could spark disputes, such as inhabiting the islands.
