Planners Weigh Bid to Annex 3,600 Acres
The Planning Commission considered Thursday a plan to annex 3,600 acres of vacant land and bean fields.
Over the next 20 years, the Irvine Co. wants to build 12,350 homes and 7 million square feet of business and research facilities on the land, which borders the closed El Toro Marine base. The annexation would increase the city’s size by about a third.
The plan would have to go to the City Council for final approval.
Some residents and city officials have expressed concern about traffic congestion, school crowding and other problems the homes might create.
