Jerry Dunphy Hospitalized
KCAL-TV Channel 9 news anchor Jerry Dunphy, whose trademark line “From the desert to the sea to all of Southern California” has been a fixture of local TV news for more than four decades, remained hospitalized Thursday after suffering a heart attack.
Dunphy reportedly collapsed outside his Wilshire Boulevard condominium Wednesday morning and was revived by paramedics. Executives at KCAL declined to disclose his condition or where he is hospitalized.
Afternoon anchor Sylvia Lopez announced Dunphy’s hospitalization at the beginning of the 4 p.m. newscast.
“We begin tonight with a story that we would rather not have to report,” she said before reading a statement from Dunphy’s family.
“It is with great sadness that we announce that our beloved father, Jerry Dunphy, is hospitalized after suffering an acute heart attack,” the statement said. “He is receiving intensive care. We ask that you join us as we pray for his recovery.”
The anchorman is notoriously guarded about his age, admitting to being 80 years old, but he is thought to be older.
Dunphy also suffered heart attacks in 1978 and 1991.
