Wolverines Stand Out in Doubles
North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake won eight of nine doubles sets en route to a 12-6 nonleague boys’ tennis victory over San Marino on Thursday at Studio City Golf and Tennis.
Harvard-Westlake (21-1) is ranked No. 2 in the Southern Section Division V rankings, with San Marino (20-4) at No. 3. Corona del Mar is ranked No. 1. The Wolverines, No. 4 in The Times’ rankings, registered three-set sweeps from the top doubles team of senior Jon Rubenstein and junior James Thayer and the No. 3 team of senior Joel Wiles and freshman Sam Wagner.
The Wolverines played without No. 2 singles player Josh Lederman (sprained right hand) and No. 3 John Lee (strained right Achilles’ tendon) while San Marino’s No. 1 singles player, Travis Kinard, missed the team bus.
In City Section boys’ tennis:
Woodland Hills Taft 15, Palisades 14 1/2--Andy Posner, Chris Volker, Daniel Sagal and Michael Freeman each won three out of four singles sets as sixth-seeded Taft (10-3) upset second-seeded Palisades (10-3) in a City Championship quarterfinal match at Palisades Recreation Center.
Freshman Chris Ko swept at No. 1 singles for Palisades.
In softball:
Santa Ana Foothill 5, Orange El Modena 3--Ashley Van Boxmeer hit a three-run homer in the first inning, but her Vanguards got only one hit over the next six innings as second-ranked Foothill came from behind to beat No. 3 El Modena in a Century League game.
Foothill (25-3, 8-0) clinched a share of its 12th consecutive league title and El Modena (20-4, 5-3) fell to third place behind Canyon (21-7, 6-2), which is ranked fifth by The Times.
Foothill pitcher Alison Yin (20-3) got out of a two-on, no-out jam in the sixth.
The Knights scored four in the fourth as Jiliane Hartfiel and Jessica Reiten sandwiched run-scoring singles around Chelsea Cantillo’s two-run single.
