Foothill Wins Title on Coston’s Big Hit
Pinch-hitter Tucker Coston singled home pinch-runner Kris Atzeff with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give No. 16 Santa Ana Foothill a 4-3 victory over No. 17 Villa Park and the Century League baseball title Tuesday at Foothill.
Reid Horton (5-2) pitched a complete game to get the win for the Knights (18-5, 12-0), giving up seven hits, two earned runs and no walks. Villa Park, the defending league champion, fell to 17-6 overall and 8-4.
La Puente Bishop Amat 7, Torrance Bishop Montgomery 2--Raul Ramirez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Mark Esparza followed with a two-run double in a five-run ninth inning to help No. 1 Bishop Amat (20-2, 6-0) pull away in a Del Rey League game at Bishop Montgomery.
Andrew Soto (3-1) struck out nine and gave up two hits in 41/3 innings of relief to earn the victory.
Crescenta Valley 16, Pasadena 5 --Pitcher Trevor Bell gave up one earned run in five innings and also hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning to lead third-ranked Crescenta Valley (19-2, 10-1) over host Pasadena.
Arcadia 13, Glendale 0--Gary Kim improved to 9-1 this season by pitching a two-hit shutout and Brent Doling had two doubles and scored three runs for sixth-ranked Arcadia (18-3, 9-2) in the Pacific League game at home.
In softball:
Santa Ana Mater Dei 1, Fullerton Rosary 0--Michelle Hoffman scored the only run on a double steal in the third for third-ranked Mater Dei (20-4, 5-1) in its Serra League victory at Clark Park in Fullerton.
Anaheim Esperanza 3, Fountain Valley 2--Brittany Fox’s home run broke a 2-2 tie and 18th-ranked Esperanza (17-8, 5-2) rallied from an early deficit to win the Sunset League game at home.
In boys’ tennis:
Irvine University 14, Irvine Northwood 4--Jeff Lawrence of top-ranked University (18-2-1, 9-0) improved his singles record this season to 23-4 with a three-set sweep to help the Trojans to a Pacific Coast League victory over Northwood at University.
Los Alamitos 12, Esperanza 6--Jason Wood and George Canete’s 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 sweep at No. 1 doubles led the way for No. 10 Los Alamitos (14-6, 10-0), which clinched the Sunset League championship with the victory over the Aztecs (16-4, 8-2) at home.
Brentwood 12, Santa Monica Crossroads 6--Eric McKean swept his three matches at No. 1 singles and the No. 3 doubles team of David Freeman and Asher Patak won all three of its sets for Brentwood (13-4, 6-1) in the Delphic League match at Reed Park in Santa Monica.
In boys’ volleyball:
Huntington Beach Marina d. Fountain Valley, 15-10, 15-9, 15-5--Beau Peters had 41 kills for visiting No. 5 Marina (9-0 in league). Tyler Hagstrom and Jack Hauck had nine kills each for Fountain Valley (5-12, 2-7).
