Double Feature
The March 17 Travel section featuring Solvang (“Santa Ynez Valley for a Song,” Weekend Escape) and Salamanca (“A Class Act in Salamanca”) was a double bonus for me.
Salamanca is my all-time favorite destination in Spain. I lived there for six weeks last spring studying Spanish at the Don Quijote School. I recommend visiting the city during Semana Santa (Holy Week). The daily processions are spectacular.
My hotel of choice is NH Palacio de Castellanos, just around the corner from the cathedral and very quiet. An excellent regional menu can be found at the nearby restaurant Cuzco, where I enjoyed many tasty meals at a moderate price.
I have visited Solvang many times and found the Royal Scandinavian Inn very comfortable at an AAA rate of $78 per night on winter weekends. Cafe Angelica, a delightful family-owned restaurant, is across from the little park.
