Bloomberg’s Record Tab to Campaign: $76 Million
Billionaire Republican Michael R. Bloomberg spent more than $76 million of his own money to become mayor of New York City, a record for a non-presidential election in the United States.
The final tally shows he spent $73.9 million to defeat Democrat Mark Green and $2.5 million on his transition and inaugural ceremony, according to his campaign staff.
That amounts to more than four times what Green spent and exceeds the combined $68.9 million spent by Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton and Republican Rick Lazio in the 2000 U.S. Senate race.
