Cell Phone Figures in Major Traffic Injury
A driver reportedly distracted while answering his cell phone slammed into the back of a 76-year-old bicyclist in Costa Mesa on Saturday, critically injuring the woman, police said.
Margaret Dailey of Costa Mesa was thrown from her bicycle in the 6 p.m. collision near the intersection of Paularino Avenue and Trinity Drive, said Costa Mesa Police Lt. Tom Winter.
Dailey was rushed to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana for treatment.
Dailey was struck by a GMC pickup driven by Israel Romero, 21, police said. Romero told police he had reached down to answer his cell phone when he slammed into Dailey.
Romero was not cited or arrested and police are continuing to investigate.
