Leaving Home With Taxpayers’ Help
Re “Lower Topanga Tenants Facing Eviction by State,” March 3: I feel for these people--being asked to move from such a wonderful spot must be heartbreaking. But let’s be reasonable. Geesh, Mr. [Scott] Dittrich, what were you thinking to invest $200,000 of your own money making improvements to property on which you are a month-to-month tenant?

I read with utter disgust that the California Department of Parks and Recreation is planning to dole out taxpayer money to people who have been living next to the beach for years at way-below-market rents. These renters were well aware that the day was coming when they would have to move. Why is it the taxpayers’ responsibility to pay these people anything? Is this correct--an average of $80,000 and up to 3 1/2 years of subsidy for each tenant? What is the mind-set of the decision-makers in this process?
