Phillies’ Bottalico Is Out for the Season

Philadelphia right-hander Ricky Bottalico has a torn labrum in his right shoulder and will probably sit out the rest of the season.

Bottalico hurt his shoulder Saturday and was put on the disabled list Sunday. A decision regarding surgery has yet to be made, the Phillies said Monday.

Bottalico is 0-3 with a 4.61 earned-run average in 30 games.

Boston Red Sox pitcher Frank Castillo was suspended for five games and fined an undisclosed amount for making contact with an umpire in a game last week.

The right-hander was ejected in the seventh inning of Boston’s 3-2 loss in San Diego Wednesday for arguing a balk call made by three of the four umpires.

Moments after the call, which led to the go-ahead run scoring, Castillo yelled at third base umpire Bill Welke and was ejected.

Castillo rushed Welke and made contact, and Welke jumped back. Castillo had to be restrained and then pushed away by teammates.

“It was a start-and-stop,” Welke said after the game. “He was arguing the fact I called the balk. He came toward me. He was angry, saying that was my run, and I ejected him for arguing the balk.

“His foot stepped on my foot. He actually spiked me pretty good.”

Bret Boone will be out of the Seattle Mariner lineup for at least the first two games of an important series with Oakland.

The Mariners’ starting second baseman underwent a magnetic resonance imaging test before Monday night’s game with the Athletics that showed inflammation behind his left kneecap.

He left Sunday’s victory at Houston after running to first base in the first inning. He hit the bag awkwardly and aggravated an injury.

Boone walked without a limp in the Mariners’ clubhouse before being examined by Dr. Larry Pedegana, the team’s medical director.

Atlanta ace Greg Maddux will not make his scheduled start tonight because of a lingering calf problem, and instead will pitch Friday night at Fenway Park.

Maddux had to leave his last two starts because of a sore left calf muscle. He did some light jogging before Monday night’s game, but Manager Bobby Cox decided to hold him back for a few more days.

Albie Lopez will pitch in Maddux’s place against the New York Mets.

New York Met right-hander Kane Davis will have surgery Monday on his right elbow and is not expected to pitch again this season.

He was 1-1 with a 7.07 ERA in 16 games. Davis was put on the disabled list May 13, but rest and rehabilitation did not help.

“It didn’t get any better,” he said.
