San Joaquin Valley Smog Level Prompts Debate
The Fresno City Council officially has opposed the local air district’s idea of moving the San Joaquin Valley into the worst-polluter category for smog.
The change in category could buy more time to achieve healthy air and help the city avoid federal sanctions, which could cost millions.
The San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District was to consider the matter at its meeting today. The district proposed moving from “severe” noncompliance with a federal ozone standard to “extreme” noncompliance. The only district in California in the extreme category is the Los Angeles-area South Coast Air District.
