Pineiro Gets Shutout, Piniella Gets an Assist
Joel Pineiro (5-3) pitched a five-hitter for his first major league shutout, leading the Seattle Mariners over the St. Louis Cardinals, 5-0, Wednesday night at Seattle.
Mark McLemore and John Olerud hit home runs for the Mariners, who also won an argument that cost the Cardinals a homer.
St. Louis’ Eli Marrero hit a drive into the left-field seats in the sixth inning and third-base umpire Larry Vanover ruled it a fair ball.
But Seattle Manager Lou Piniella appealed and Vanover reversed the call after consulting with the other umpires.
Philadelphia 7, Cleveland 3--Vicente Padilla (9-4) gave up nine hits but worked out of jams for most of his 6 1/3 innings, leading the Phillies at Cleveland.
Tempers flared briefly in the ninth when Phillie reliever Jose Mesa drilled former teammate Omar Vizquel in the back with a pitch. Mesa may be unhappy with Vizquel, who in his recently released autobiography suggested that Mesa choked in Game 7 of the 1997 World Series.
Texas 10, Cincinnati 4--Rookie Kevin Mench hit a two-run single and Michael Young had a bases-loaded triple as the Rangers rallied for seven runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Boston 7, Colorado 5--Frank Castillo (5-6) gave up five runs and eight hits in 6 1/3 innings for his third victory in his last four starts, despite three errors by the Red Sox at Boston.
Mike Hampton (3-8) continued to struggle, giving up seven runs and 10 hits in five innings.
Montreal 2, Detroit 1--Vladimir Guerrero hit his 16th home run and also scored on Andres Galarraga’s 10th-inning single at Detroit.
Chicago White Sox 2, New York Mets 1--Tony Graffanino provided all of Chicago’s offense, hitting a home run and driving in the go-ahead at Chicago.
Mike Piazza homered in the seventh inning.
Oakland 8, Milwaukee 0--Mark Mulder (6-4) gave up nine hits in his first shutout this season, and Terrence Long drove in three runs as the host Athletics won their seventh in a row.
The A’s are the only undefeated team in interleague play this season.
San Diego 2, Baltimore 0--Brian Lawrence gave up five hits in eight innings, and Ray Lankford drove in both runs at Baltimore.
Lawrence (7-3) became the fourth pitcher this season and 36th ever to strike out the side on nine pitches, retiring Brook Fordyce, Jerry Hairston and Melvin Mora in the third inning.
Florida 13, Kansas City 5--Preston Wilson ended an 0-for-26 slump with two homers and three runs batted in for the Marlins at Kansas City, Mo.
Marlin second baseman Luis Castillo singled in the third and in the eighth, extending his hitting streak to 28 games, the longest this season in the majors.
