Argentina’s Loss Felt in Bangladesh
DHAKA, Bangladesh — Argentina’s exit Wednesday from the World Cup stunned thousands of Bangladeshi soccer fans, one of whom succumbed to a heart attack, while others tore down Argentine flags and burnt them in anger.
Lokman Hossain, a 48-year-old businessman who was hospitalized after suffering a heart attack when Argentina lost to England on June 7, died on Wednesday, his brother Abdul Hannan said.
Many distraught fans took down giant Argentine flags that they had hoisted atop their homes. Some tore up the flags or burnt them in anger, while others replaced them with Brazilian or Italian ones.
Two young fans of Argentina have already died in Bangladesh since the World Cup started on May 31.
One of them fell from a rooftop while trying to hoist Argentina’s national flag in the town of Cox’s Bazar, 185 miles south of Dhaka.
In the second fatal accident, a 17-year old fell into power lines and was electrocuted as he tried to hoist Argentina’s flag atop a building in another southern city, Chittagong.
