Of Nets and Shaq: Don’t Diss New Jersey

As a longtime, former resident of New Jersey, I was disappointed at the perpetuation of ridiculous stereotypes put into print in the June 11 editorial “Never Mind the Buzzer.” It is to be expected that television coverage of the Nets-Lakers playoff games is ignorant of the fact that New Jersey is not New York, as they hold up headlines of the New York Post and Newsday instead of the Newark Star-Ledger and interview New Yorkers on the street instead of New Jerseyites. But not your editorial staff.

New Jersey residents do not bemoan the fact that they are not New Yorkers, nor are they ashamed of their beautiful state. New Jersey is the home of Bell Laboratories, Princeton University, the best tomatoes grown in the U.S.--not to mention the birthplace of Shaquille O’Neal. Its residents have much to be proud of, and they are. Please desist in putting down other states. It makes Californians look a bit insecure.
