President, 3 Governors Sign Water Agreement
MEXICO
President Vicente Fox and the governors of three Mexican border states signed an agreement aimed at providing the region with enough water from the Rio Grande while honoring the country’s growing water debt to the U.S.
The accord could pave the way for a plan to resolve the international dispute.
Fox signed the agreement with the governors of Chihuahua, Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas.
In the agreement, the federal government promises to develop an updated system of rules for the equitable distribution of water to the Mexican communities bordering the Rio Grande and to modernize and redesign irrigation systems in the area.
