Brazil’s Emerson Is Ruled Out

Brazil was dealt a major setback when team captain Emerson dislocated his shoulder in practice and was ruled out of the tournament.

The Roma midfielder was hurt while playing goalkeeper at an informal scrimmage at Munsu Stadium in Ulsan, South Korea, where Brazil plays Turkey today in the opening Group C match. Diving to make a save on a shot by Rivaldo, Emerson fell heavily and his right shoulder popped out of the joint team doctor Jose Luis Runco said

Emerson’s immediate sub is Vampeta, though Kleberson and Gilberto Silva also play the position. The roster spot will be filled by Ricardinho from Corinthians.

While ABC showed taped-delayed coverage of the 1-1 tie between England and Sweden throughout the nation at 12:30 p.m. PDT Sunday, KABC Channel 7 in Los Angeles preempted the network’s World Cup coverage in favor of a Children’s Miracle Network special.

The special had been planned ahead of time, but some program listings, including those in The Times’ sports section Sunday, had ABC’s soccer coverage being shown by Channel 7 at 12:30. The station reported it received hundreds of complaint calls from angry soccer fans.

Coverage of the England-Sweden game, which was played live in Japan at 2:30 a.m. PDT on Sunday, was eventually shown by Channel 7 at 12:30 a.m. today, 22 hours later.
